Kerala, conversely, has made significant headway in combating this issue through innovative drug rehabilitation programs and nasha mukti kendra but it’s a long road ahead. The state’s approach to guiding individuals struggling with addiction has been noteworthy, encompassing a wide range of efforts aiming not just at treatment but also at prevention and reintegration into society.

As Kerala boasts a high literacy rate and favourable human development indices, it may appear unexpected to encounter a substantial drug issue in the state. However, the convergence of socio-economic factors and its strategic position along international drug trafficking routes has fuelled the emergence of substance abuse. 

Last year, Kerala registered a 300% surge in cases related to narcotics, liquor, and banned tobacco products compared to 2016 when 5,924 cases were registered. In Kerala, prevalent misused substances include alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and prescription medications. The use of these substances has not only led to the breakdown of individuals and families but has also given rise to associated problems, including criminal activity, mental health challenges, and the transmission of diseases.

Government’s initiatives 

Kerala government’s de-addiction centres are complex, incorporating medical therapies, psychological counselling, community engagement, and government measures. The state has built a slew of rehabilitation facilities and programs aimed at both physical and psychological restoration. There are 14 de-addiction centres started in Kerala under Vimukthi Mission one in each district.

Another important aspect that Kerala government needs to look into is the availability of drugs and how to seize and put a halt on drugs coming into the state and then distributed which they are doing.
